Sam Pretorius is one of our 'Dream Children' with a supremely inspiring story to tell. In 1996, at age 11, in his Grade 5 year at The Ridge, he was diagnosed with Leukemia. Through Reach for a Dream's Foundation's system of connecting children between the ages of 3-18 who face a professionally diagnosed
life-threatening illness, Sam's dream of going to Disneyworld was realized in 1997.

In the August of 1997, Sam, a frail, 12 year-old boy, suffering with Leukemia,
acted in the Reach for a Dream TV commercial filmed at St John’s College. Although he was weak from his treatments and had to be wrapped in a
blanket between takes, he wouldn’t let a stand-in actor tell his story.

The Reach for a Dream Foundation believes in the power of dreams,
especially the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses.
And for the past 21 years, the foundation has persevered to make
these dreams come true.

21 years ago, the late Owen Parnell, a past president of the Randburg
Rotary Club, read an article on the Make A Wish Foundation in America,
and thought that it would be a great idea for the children of South Africa.
And with the help of Lions International and Round Table,
an idea became a reality.
